IA flight makes emergency landing in Madras

Passengers of an Indian Airlines flight on the Chennai-Singapore sector on Tuesday morning had a narrow escape, when the aircraft made a full scale emergency landing at Chennai airport after encountering 'heavy turbulence and jerks', airport and airline sources said.

Four passengers who suffered injury were admitted to a private hospital. There were a total of 187 passengers aboard the flight.

The sources said the flight had taken off at 0330 am and half-an-hour later, the flight encountered 'heavy turbulence and jerks'.

The commander of the flight, Capt Chandrasekhar, immediately informed the Air Traffic Control and sought and was given permission to land back.

There was a 'minor flutter' due to the incident aboard the aircraft, but the pilot landed the flight safely at 0420 am, the sources said.

The rest of the passengers were put in two city hotels later, the sources said.
