Resignations jolt TMC in PondicherryIn a sudden development, Tamil Maanila Congress's Pondicherry unit president and PWD minister, P Kannan, resigned from his party post on Wednesday.Addressing a press conference, he said his resignation letter was being forwarded to party president G K Moopanaar. In a related development earlier in the day, three TMC legislators, Manohar, Rajasekera Udayar and Ezhumalai, in a memorandum addressed to the assembly speaker and handed over to the legislative assembly secretary, informed that there was a split in the local unit of the TMC, which is a partner in the Congress-led ruling coalition. Kannan said the TMC's territorial unit general secretary Lakshminarayanan had also resigned. The resignation letter was forwarded to the party high command. Asked whether he continued to be a primary member of the party, Kannan quipped, ''I think so''. He, however, said he continues to be a minister in the coalition government. Kannan, who earlier stated that he had resigned from the post respecting the sentiments of the party workers, said it was in protest against the party's action in rewarding with power and position those who had indulged in anti-party activities and revolted against the local leadership. He also said those who were allegedly involved in a murder case and who had grabbed industrial units were also given positions despite opposition from the local unit. Kannan further alleged that local administration minister C Jayakumar was allegedly involved in the case relating to the missing of a home guard and another TMC minister, Kandasamy, had grabbed industrial units. If the party believed in healthy politics, the erring ministers should have been asked to resign, but no action was taken by the party high command, he added.
