Assistant sub-inspector held
for torture in Orissa

M I Khan in Bhubaneshwar

An assistant sub-inspector of the Orissa police was arrested on charge of torture at the Bhedan police station of Bargarh district early this year.

According to sources at the state police headquarters in Cuttack, Dallgobinda Sahoo was arrested on Monday, for torturing an innocent person.

Sahoo, who was suspended by the state government, was produced in court.

Police sources said that some persons had thrown water colours on a policeman during Holi on March 21 this year, following which a person was arrested and brought to the Bhedan police station.

The arrested person was tortured during interrogation, by Sahoo, the sources said.

Deputy inspector general of police, Sambhalpur range, R P Singh, had submitted a report to the state government last month.

The action followed publication of reports and a photograph of the torture, in a local daily.

The sources said that the charge of torture against Sahoo was proved on the basis of prima facie evidence.

Human rights activist Chiita Behera said that the case would give moral support to people fighting against police atrocities in the state.

Home department sources said Sahoo was arrested to proved that nobody was above the law.
