Four legislators quit Congress in Goa

Congress leader Ravi Naik, former Union minister Ramakant Khalap, former minister Sanjay Bandekar and legislator Manohar Azgaokar have informed Speaker Pratapsingh Rane about their decision.

Azgaonkar, who confirmed the development, told UNI over the telephone that they were forced to take such a decision as the Congress high command did not take any initiative to solve problems being confronted by the party in Goa.

Elaborating on the reasons for their decision, Azgaokar said that several state party leaders were repeatedly demanding removal of state Congress president Luizinho Faleiro ever since the 11 legislators broke away from the Congress and formed a government with the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

He alleged that the Congress high command did not initiate any steps to solve the grievances of partymen even after another group of five legislators, led by former minister Sheikh Hassan Haroon, left the party to form a separate group in the name of the Indian National Congress (Sheikh Hassan) group.

Pointing out that alleged manipulation in the Congress organisational elections was also brought to the notice of the party high command from time to time, he said despite this, circumstances were created by the leaders to go ahead with the organisational elections with Faleiro at the helm of affairs.

''We felt that there is no point in continuing in a party which could not take any decision even after suffering a setback,'' he said, adding that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government at the Centre was 'doing a good job' in the interests of the nation and for the all-round development of the country.
