Alliance Air plane makes emergency landing

Airport Authority of India and Alliance Air sources said the pilot of the aircraft, carrying 93 passengers and four infants, suspected that one of the tyres was missing soon after the plane took off at 0600 hours (IST) and gained some height. He immediately reported the matter to the Air Traffic Control in Madras airport and sought permission to land under full emergency.

The aircraft, after hovering for about 90 minutes, to ditch surplus fuel, landed safely at 0745 hours, the sources said.

Only last week, an Indian Airlines flight operating on the Madras-Singapore sector had made an emergency landing after the aircraft encountered heavy turbulence.

Later, airport and Alliance Air sources said there was nothing wrong with the tyres, and that the pilot had requested an emergency landing as a precautionary measure.

Within minutes of the take-off, the pilot heard a noise that seemed to indicate a tyre burst and he did a 'low pass' to enable the ATC personnel to observe the aircraft belly, but they found nothing amiss, the sources said.

Yet, as a precautionary measure, the pilot jettisoned fuel and landed under emergency conditions.

The flight could not leave in the course of the day, as the weather at Port Blair was not conducive, the sources said, adding that it would leave at 0415 hours on Monday. Passengers have been accommodated in city hotels.
