Striking for the seventh time in just over a month against non-Assames communties suspected United Liberation Front of Assam militants gunned down 16 people and injured many others in three incidents in lower Assam's Bongaigaon district on Thursday evening.

Other reports said that 21 persons were killed.

Police sources said in Guwahati that motorcycle-borne ultras toting AK 47 rifles shot eight persons - five Biharis, a Bengali and two others - and injured many others at New Bongaigoan under Bongaigaon police station at 18:30 hours IST

Simultaneously, another group of suspected ULFA militants mowed down five tea garden labourers at Birjura tea estate under Bongaigaon police station before escaping in a car, the sources said.

In the third incident, ULFA extremists shot dead three persons at Basalgaon Lalmati under Abhayapuri police station at around 20:10 hours IST.

Most victims were Hindi-speaking migrants from Bihar.

Police blamed militants from the United Liberation Front of Assam.

An anguished Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta condemned the brutal killings and urged the people to maintain peace and vigil against such attacks by militants.
