NDA's Namdhari to be Jharkhand Speaker

The Opposition Tuesday unanimously accepted the candidature of Inder Singh Namdhari for the post of Assembly Speaker in the newly constituted state. This came as an unexpected boon for the National Democratic Alliance as it tries to call the shots in tribal-dominated Jharkhand.

Namdhari is the Bharatiya Janata Party-NDA's official nominee in Jharkhand, India's 27th state carved out of Bihar on November 15.

The Speaker is scheduled to be elected on Wednesday.

A decision was taken by Opposition parties Tuesday afternoon at a meeting, attended among others by Congress Legislature Party leader Furkan Ansari, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha legislature party leader Stephen Marandi, Rashtriya Janata Dal legislature party leader Girinath Singh, Communist Party of India legislature party leader Bhuneshwar Mehta and lone members of the CPI (Marxist-Leninist) and Marxist Co-ordination Centre.

Meanwhile, the assembly met on the first day of its four-day maiden session.

Eighty of the 81-member assembly were administered the oath by pro-tem Speaker Viseswar Khan before the House was adjourned for the day at 1245 hours IST.

Independent legislator Madhavlal Singh was not present in the House.
