Bihar to be divided for second
time with birth of Jharkhand: PTI

Bihar and Orissa were born on March 22, 1912, after the bifurcation of Bengal.

After sharing a common destiny and history for around 24 years, Orissa was born from the womb of Bihar on April 1, 1936. With the coming into being of Jharkhand as the 28th state of the Indian Union, Bihar will be partitioned for the second time.

With the creation of the state, Bihar will shrink to about 94,000 square km, while the expanse of Jharkhand, whose bowels are a treasure trove of minerals covered by a vast carpet of forests, will be around 80,000 square km.

On the recommendations of the States Reorganisation Commission, Bihar had to transfer 3100 square km and a population of little over 14.46 lakh to West Bengal in 1956.

With this, the number of legislators in the Bihar Assembly was reduced from 331 to 318, which was revised to 324 in 1977 after an increase in population.

Bihar will lose another over 80,000 square km and a population of over 2.18 crore to Jharkhand leading to reduction in the strength of the state assembly to 243.

However, the Bihar Legislative Council will continue to remain a symbol of the shared history of Bihar and Jharkhand for a few more years as the councillors elected from Jharkhand will continue as members till expiry of their terms.
