Brain fever death toll rises to 48

The death toll due to the brain fever (Japanese encephalitis) epidemic in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 48, with seven more children succumbing to the disease over the last week.

Briefing newsmen after a cabinet meeting in Hyderabad on Monday, Minister for Information N Siva Prasad said that the government had controlled the dreaded disease to a large extent when compared to last year. He said that during the corresponding period last year 330 cases were reported, while the death toll stood at 76.

"Although 243 cases have been reported this year, fatalities have been 48," he added.

He said that there was a high incidence of brain fever from Cuddapah, Anantapur, Kurnool, Chittoor, Guntur, Prakasam, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda and Warangal. "Other districts that did not report any cases last year have reported 27 cases and six deaths. The districts include Hyderabad, Khammam, Karimnagar and Rangareddy," he explained.
