NSCN accused of ceasefire violations

A statement by Assam Rifles said the outlawed group was taking part in regular incidents of extortion and kidnapping. "The NSCN is obviously not honouring its commitment towards maintaining peace," it said.

Led by Thuingaleng Muivah and Isak Chishi Swu, the NSCN agreed to a ceasefire with the government in August 1997, ending more than 50-years of insurgency. The NSCN is fighting for an independent tribal homeland.

The statement highlighted a recent incident in which NSCN rebels looted two buses and fired on security forces deployed at the scene. It also warned of severe retaliation if such violations continued.

Peace talks with the government have stalled over an NSCN demand that the ceasefire be extended all over the Northeast.

The Nagaland government has labelled the existing ceasefire a 'total farce' and urged New Delhi to review its stance.

"The ceasefire is nothing but a government license to the NSCN to kill, loot, and kidnap people without any fear," Nagaland Chief Minister S C Jamir told AFP by telephone.

"We want the Centre to review the terms of the ceasefire and include provisions whereby any cadre found violating the truce could be dealt with severely," he said.

More than 25,000 people have lost their lives due the insurgency in Nagaland since 1947.
