Maran's condition improves

Union Industries Minister Murasoli Maran, whose condition turned critical on Tuesday night at the Apollo Hospitals in Madras, has shown 'improvement' but was on ventilator support, Apollo Hospital Chairman Dr Pratap C Reddy said in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The condition of Maran, who was admitted to the hospital on October 28, deteriorated on Tuesday night after he went into severe pulmonary oedema due to dysfunction of his left ventricle as a consequence of 'hypertrophic obstructive cardio-myopathy', Reddy told reporters at the hospital.

He said the minister had developed recurrent pulmonary oedema and was earlier treated with 'AV sequential pace-making', which led to some improvement in his condition. However, around 2130 hours (IST), he went into severe pulmonary oedema and was put on artificial ventilator.

After investigations revealed the presence of a severe gradient across the outflow tract of the left ventricle, a non-surgical procedure - Alcohol Ablation of the septum - was performed to decrease the gradient.

The minister's response to this line of treatment was encouraging resulting in improvement in his condition. However, the condition of Maran, who was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit after the procedure at 0400 hours (IST), had to be monitored very closely for the next two or three days, he added.

As Maran's condition deteriorated, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, his cabinet colleagues and several Dravida Munnetra Kazhagan functionaries rushed to the hospital and remained there till he was brought back to the ICU from the cath lab.

The Tamil Maanila Congress President G K Moopanar also remained in the hospital and left only around 0330 hours (IST)

Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary A P Muthusamy and Home Secretary Shantha Sheila Nair were also present in the hospital.
