BJP rejects JMM demand for chief ministership

''The ball is in their court. The BJP will accept whatever they decide,'' party vice president K Jana Krishnamurthy told newspersons in New Delhi.

Krishnamurthy said it was wrong on part of the JMM to insist that they alone represented the tribals of the state.

Of the total 32 BJP legislators in Jharkhand, the JMM had just 12 against 14 of the BJP's from the tribal areas. ''How can they make such a claim?'' he asked.

The BJP vice president said the Samata party (five legislators) and Janata Dal (United) with its three legislators had already announced their backing to the BJP nominee for chief ministership and the JMM should reconcile to it.

"If they had certain other proposals to participate in the government the BJP would definitely consider them," he said.

Krishnamurthy said the BJP, having been the largest party in the Lok Sabha, was asked to lead the National Democratic Alliance government with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as prime minister. Similar should be the case in Jharkhand where the BJP had 23 legislators.

Meanwhile, according to BJP sources, Babu Lal Marandi was ahead of the others in the race for chief ministership of Jharkhand.

Marandi called on the prime minister at his residence on Wednesday evening leading to speculations that he was being considered for the post.
