Independent security force for airports soon

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Union government has decided to create a separate security force for airports in the country, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Chamanlal Gupta said in Itanagar on Tuesday.

The new force, which would make extensive use of sniffer dogs and x-ray machines, would be called the Civil Aviation Security Force.

Gupta, who was on a day's visit to Arunachal Pradesh, told newspersons that the airports located in the North-East, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Amritsar and Jalandhar had been identified as ''most sensitive.''

The minister said the government was committed to set up an airport in each state capital, including Itanagar. A team, he said, had already visited the proposed airport site at Gumto-Ginchi and submitted its report to the Civil Aviation Ministry.

Gupta said the Centre had also agreed to provide two helicopters to the state, primarily for delivering essential commodities in far flung areas. Currently, the state is dependent on the Indian Air Force for this.
