India Seniors beat India-A by 52 runs

E-Mail this report to a friend

India Seniors beat India-A today by 52 runs in the first match of the Honda NKP Salve Challenger Trophy at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Chasing 280 to win, Indian A were looking good at one stage at 147/2 but some careless batting coupled with some fine bowling and fielding ruined their chances.

Nikhil Chopra, Sunil Joshi and Anil Kumble bowled well for the Seniors picking up 3 wickets each.

The stand-in opener for Sachin Tendulkar in the India Senior squad was outstanding. Orissa batsman Shiv Shankar Das' 73 helped the Seniors set a challenging target.

Das' 94-run partnership with stand-in skipper Rahul Dravid, plus a late-order flourish helped the Seniors' cause.

Dravid won the toss and decided to bat leaving Mohd Azharuddin's men to chase a tall score under lights.

India Seniors put up a superb display of some sensible batting. The opening pair of VVS Laxman and Das scored briskly in the first 15 overs without taking any undue risks.

As India-A set out chasing a score of 279, it never looked like they were going to get there. They were bundled out for 227. Their highest scorer was A Kumar who scored 72 off 87 balls. Azharrudin was caught by Anil Kumble on 23.
