Pakistan tests short-range Hatf-1 missile

E-Mail this report to a friend

Pakistan on Monday test fired a short-range Hatf-1surface-to-surface missile. A government statement said the missile can hit targets 100 kilometers (60 miles) away and can carry a variety of warheads. It did not say whether that included a nuclear warhead.

Pakistan's missile arsenal includes a longer-range ballistic missile with a range of up to 1,500 kilometers (900 miles), capable of reaching most targets in India. This missile can also carry a nuclear warhead.

"The new design allows a greater payload, improved accuracy and can successfully destroy targets at up to 100 kilometers using a variety of warheads," said the statement. "The Hatf-1 is an indigenous effort and contributes significantly to Pakistan's national security and deterrence strategy," the statement said.

It also said that prior warning of the test was given to all of Pakistan's neighbours.
