Vajpayee speaks to Nepal PM,
expresses concern

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Thursday spoke to Nepalese Prime Minister G P Koirala to convey India's serious concern over the outbreak of violence directed specially against Indians and urged him to take firm steps to put an end to it.

Vajpayee, who is currently holidaying at the Kumarakom resort in Kerala, also conveyed his condolences over the tragic death of four Nepalese citizens in the riots engineered by anti-India elements in Nepal.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, Koirala told Vajpayee that the violent incidents appeared to be part of a conspiracy aimed at harming the traditionally close ties between India and Nepal.

''We have set up a commission to inquire into its origins and find out if it has any external dimensions,'' Koirala said. The Nepalese prime minister also informed Vajpayee that no Indian was killed in the violence. He added that no untoward incident was reported on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Meera Shankar, Joint Secretary (North) in the External Affairs Ministry, summoned Dr M K Bhattarai, Charge d'Affaires of Nepal, to the Foreign Office in New Delhi and handed over a note expressing India's grave concern about the safety and security of Indian nationals in the Himalayan kingdom.
