Militants Storm Red Fort in Delhi

A Correspondent in Delhi

New Delhi's high-security Red Fort was stormed by a group of militants belonging to the Lashkar-e-Tayiba late on Friday night. Three men were killed in the attack.

The Lashkar has vehemently opposed the government-sponsored ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir and has more then once threatened to carry out strikes to defeat the peace initiative.

According to information available, two fidayeens stormed the Red Fort in Old Delhi, and opened fire at the military personnel on duty.

Two of them died on the spot.

Traditionally, the prime minister hoists the national flag at the fort on Independence Day.

There is still confusion about what exactly happened at the fort on Friday evening. Some speculate that two militants sneaked into the fort sometime during the evening and carried out the strike.

Others say probably militants already under military custody snatched service weapons from security personnel and opened fire.

Till late night, senior police and army officials were inside the fort carrying out combing operations

The fort houses a military unit and a high-security interrogation cell used both by the Central Bureau of Interrogation and the army.

The police have declared a red alert across the city.

In the past few weeks there have been repeated intelligence warnings about militants targeting high-security areas in various parts of the country, especially Delhi.

There were also warnings about suicide squads having sneaked into Delhi in the wake of the ceasefire in Kashmir.
