LTTE declares month-long cease-fire

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has declared a month-long unilateral cease-fire on Thursday.

The Tigers, in a statement on their official website, claimed it was a "goodwill measure to facilitate the peace process".

The statement said LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran had issued orders to all units and combat formations to "cease hostile military actions against the Sri Lanka armed forces from midnight December 24, 2000 to midnight January 24, 2001."

The announcement followed the government's rejection of the rebels' demand for de-escalation of fighting before peace talks could resume.

The LTTE said it was prepared to extend the "period of peace" if the government responded "positively by ceasing armed hostilities against our forces and takes steps to implement the Norwegian proposal of mutual confidence-building measures."
