Assam govt blames ULFA
for their kin's killing

The Assam government has attributed the killings of United Liberation Front of Asom kin to the internal clashes among the ULFA top brass.

'The government has information that differences within the ULFA leadership are responsible for these attacks," the state government claimed in a newspaper advertisement on Friday.

ULFA had, however, alleged that the government had used a band of Surrendered United Liberation Front of Asom cadre to target the former's relatives in a bid to pressurise them.

Last fortnight, at least ten relatives of top ULFA leaders were killed and attacks made on the houses of many ULFA leaders, including the three top leaders - Paresh Barua, Tapan Barua and Dristi Rajkhowa.

ULFA's foreign secretary Sasha Choudhury's brother, another top ULFA leader Subhash Sharma's father and half a dozen others were among those killed.

The government said that the motive behind the attacks could be to prevent further surrenders.

Most of these attacks were seen as acts of revenge as they followed massacres of innocents by suspected militants.

The state government had, however, decided to provide security cover to relatives of ULFA leaders.

"The police has been directed to provide special security to families of the top ULFA cadres, but this cannot obviously be done for every family of the ULFA cadres. However, the police will provide maximum security to them,'' the statement said.
