Orissa to host CPI-M politburo meet

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

Orissa will for the first time host the Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo meet in January 2001.

The meeting will decide the strategy for assembly elections in West Bengal, Kerala,Tamil Nadu and Assam, which will be held early next year.

The central committee meeting of the CPI-M politburo will be held in Bhubaneswar from January 19 to 22, followed by a public rally. "This is for the first time that Bhubaneswar will host a politburo meeting of the CPI-M," said state CPI-M leader Santosh Das.

The meeting will be attended by 73 central committee members and politburo members.

The meeting assume significance because the central committee will finalise tactics for the crucial West Bengal assembly election next year. "Though the party central committee will decide tactics for West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Assam, West Bengal is certainly crucial," admitted Das.

The central committee will also discuss the financial crisis in the country, the drought situation and post-cyclone rehabilitation and reconstruction in Orissa.

Das told rediff.com that the Orissa unit was gearing up to organise the meeting.

Senior CPI-M leaders, including general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet, former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu, Kerala Chief Minister E K Nayanar, West Bengal Chief Minister Budhadeb Bhattacharya and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and senior politburo members like Sitaram Yechuri and Prakash Karat, besides top party functionaries, will attend the meeting.

Das said that the rally on January 22 will be addressed by Surjeet, Basu, Nayanar and Sarkar.

Party sources said that a two-day meeting of the state committee was held on December 11 and 12 as a prelude to the January meeting of the party politburo. "We have finalised the strategy to organise a politburo meet next month," sources said.
