Gunmen attack family of ULFA leader

Gunmen in Assam attacked the family of the region's most powerful separatist rebel chief, police said Thursday.

The men sprayed bullets from a car Wednesday night at the residence of Paresh Baruah - military commander of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) -- in Jeraigaon village.

No one was injured in the attack. However, Baruah's mother was home at the time of the attack.

Baruah is believed to be in Bhutan, where the ULFA general headquarters are located.

The attack follows massacres [which have claimed nearly 75 lives in five weeks] of non-Assamese businessmen, for which the ULFA has been blamed.

In three years, 20 family members of ULFA leaders have been killed by gunmen.

The rebel group, fighting for an independent homeland, claimed the killings were by government agents.
