27 persons mowed down in Assam

In another cold-blooded strike against Hindi-speaking people in Assam, suspected United Liberation Front of Asom militants gunned down 27 persons and seriously wounded 15 others in the Sadiya-Tezu road in remote Sunpura forest in Tinsukia district Thursday evening, police said.

Coming eight days after the massacre of 22 people of the community in Bongaigaon and Karbi Anglong districts, the militants lying in wait in the densely wooded area fired a hail of bullets at three trucks carrying the people, who were returning home from Sunpura bazaar to Sadiya, the sources said.

Senior police and civil officials have rushed to the spot.

An anguished Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta condemned the ghastly killing and directed officials to take all possible measures to hunt down the killers.

With Thursday's killing 97 Hindi-speaking persons have died at the hands of militants since October 21 in eight strikes.
