Parliament adjourned for another day

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the second consecutive day after Opposition members demanded the immediate resignation of Union ministers L K Advani, Uma Bharati and Murli Manohar Joshi.

They were demanding their resignation as all of them were chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the Babri masjid demolition case.

Speaker G M C Balayogi, who had adjourned the LS on Tuesday on the same issue, adjourned the proceedings on Wednesday after the Opposition members started shouting slogans against ruling party members. The Rajya Sabha too was adjourned on Tuesday.

Opposition members in the Lok Sabha recalled the demolition of the disputed structure on this day in 1992 at Ayodhya and rushed to the well, raising slogans and forcing Balayogi to order switching off of the cameras.

"We want resignations," chanted the members in the well amid uproarious scenes. Satyavrat Chaturvedi (Congress) tore a paper and threw the pieces towards the Lok Sabha reporters' table.

"We will not allow the chargesheeted home minister to speak on the Ayodhya incident, which has put our heads to shame," remarked a Congress member in Rajya Sabha as Chairman Krishna Kant repeated appeals to allow Question Hour were ignored.

BJP members countered the slogans of Congress and said, ''We will not allow politics of vote-banks.''

Kant said he appreciated the feelings of the members and would allow them to speak after Question Hour.

Even as he ordered Question Hour to be taken up, Congress and other opposition party members refused to yield ground.

The chairman adjourned the House for the day after 15 minutes.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was in the Lok Sabha when the protests began.

He was to make a statement regarding loss of lives and property due to floods, drought and other natural calamities in various parts of the country.

Repeated pleas by Balayogi to determined opposition members to return to their seats went unheeded leading to adjournment of the House for the day.
