Another deer death at Nandankanan zooM I Khan in Bhubaneswar
Another spotted deer died due to tuberculosis at the Nandankanan biological park and zoo late on Wednesday. In the last week, three deer died at the zoo. Last week, two spotted deer died due to tuberculosis. Rediff.com had reported on Wednesday that the threat of death was looming large over deer at the zoo due to tuberculosis. In the wake of last week's deaths of two deer, an eight-member health team from the Orissa Veterinary College deputed by the state government had begun treatment of animals on a priority basis. But, as apprehended by the team doctors, most of the 60 deer suffering from TB may die. Zoo director Vinod Kumar said that the deer suffering from acute tuberculosis may not live for long. A team doctor, on the condition of anonymity, told rediff.com that over a dozen deer were suffering from acute TB and they may not live for long. Although the team has started intensive treatment, which will go on for a month, the zoo authorities are awaiting the arrival of a central team of experts to implement measures to save the remaining deer. In one month, five deer have died at the zoo due to TB.
