Jharkhand bill tabled in Bihar assembly

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Bihar State Reorganisation Bill, 2000, was tabled by Chief Minister Rabri Devi in the state assembly today amid protests by legislators from the Communist Party of India-Marxist, an ally of the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal, and a few other members.

State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ram Chandra Purvey initiated discussion on the bill which could not be held due to bedlam in the house over demands for the resignation of Rabri Devi by National Democratic Alliance members as she has been chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation in a disproportionate assets case.

The bill is likely to be approved unanimously by the house late tonight.

Altogether 317 legislators in the 325-member assembly had proposed amendments in the bill, mostly favouring a change in the proposed name of the state from Vananchal to Jharkhand.

Earlier, NDA legislators staged protests before the chamber of state assembly Speaker Sadanand Singh demanding action against those Rashtriya Janata Dal legislators who ''engineered'' attacks on Bharatiya Janata Party members in the House yesterday.
