E-Mail this report to a friend

Three State Transport Corporation buses have been set ablaze by volunteers of the Dalit Panthers of India in Perambalur and Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu since yesterday.

The DPI workers, angered by the arrest of party convenor Thirumavalavan while staging a demonstration at Perambalur yesterday set fire to an STC bus at Alampoondi near Bhuvanagiri today.

They set fire to another bus at Kothattai in Cuddalore district last evening, besides indulging in stone-throwing damaging several buses.

Fifteen persons were arrested in this connection, police said, adding that 150 police pickets were posted and 50 mobile parties formed to deal with the situation. A red alert has been sounded in the district.

Bus services were suspended on a few routes following the incidents.

The workers also set ablaze a government bus at Elumur in Perambalur district early today.

Four DPI workers were arrested in this connection, police said. About 20 persons were arrested when they resorted to stone-throwing, damaging another STC bus at Thirumandurai in Perambalur district.

Police patrolling of major roads in the district has been intensified following the incident.

Thirumavalavan, who was arrested along with 200 others, was released yesterday itself.
