Framing of charges against Jaya in Tansi case put off again

Framing of charges against former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha and five others in the Tansi land deal case was today put off for the fifth time, to June 8, due to the pendency of a writ petition filed before the Madras high court by former minister Mohamad Asif, one of the accused.

Special judge-3 P Anbazhagan adjourned the case when the defence counsel brought to his notice the pendency of the petition challenging the trial court's jurisdiction in ordering Asif's medical examination by a panel of doctors.

Asif, who could not come to the court citing coronary heart ailment, had moved the high court after Anbazhagan passed an order on May 31 asking him to appear before the dean of the government general hospital in Madras for medical examination to ascertain whether he was really unconscious and was not in a position to follow the court proceedings as stated in the medical certificate produced by him.

Even after the panel of doctors conducted the medical examination and submitted its report to the court, the trial court could not proceed further in the case as the high court judge E Padmanaban was believed to have observed that the trial judge would not go ahead with the case unmindful of the pendency of the writ petition.

Jayalalitha, her associate Sasikala Natarajan and Asif did not appear before the court today as their petitions seeking to dispense with their personal appearances for the day were allowed.

In view of the pendency of the petition before the high court, the judge also did not reveal the contents of the medical report on the condition of Asif.
