Simultaneous polls in Arunachal too

E-Mail this report to a friend

Arunachal Pradesh today became the fifth state to go in for simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls. The other states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim.

The way for the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls on October 1 in Arunachal was paved by the dissolution of the State Legislative assembly by the Governor Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha on the advice of the Mukut Mithi cabinet.

The state cabinet, which met here yesterday, had unanimously recommended dissolution of the state assembly to facilitate simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly poll, Information and Public Relations Minister G C Teli said.

Arunachal Pradesh has a 60-member assembly and two Lok Sabha seats.

Mithi became chief minister after the Arunachal Congress headed by Gegong Apang was defeated in a confidence vote in the assembly on January 18. Mithi had come out of the Apang group alongwith his supporters and formed Arunachal Congress (M) to form an alternative government after the ouster of Apang.

Later, the entire Arunachal Congress (M) merged with the four-member Indian National Congress.
