Charges framed against Jaya in Tansi case

Special Judge-III P Anbazhagan today framed charges against former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha, her close friend Sasikala Natarajan and five others in the Rs 35.1 million Tansi land deal case, in respect of Sasi Enterprises.

Charges were framed against the accused under Section 120(b) of the Indian Penal Code read with Sections 13(2) and 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Sections 109, 420, 409, 199 of the IPC read with Section 13(2) and 13(1)(e) of the PCA.

The prosecution case was that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham chief during her tenure as chief minister had purchased land of the state-owned Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation for Sasi Enterprises, in which she and Sasikala Natarajan were partners, at an undervalued rate, causing wrongful loss to the state exchequer to the tune of Rs 6.6 million.

Besides Jayalalitha and Sasikala, the other accused in the case are: former rural industries minister Mohammed Asif, former chairman and managing director of Tansi T R Srinivasan, former deputy collector (stamps) S Nagarajan and then principal secretary to the chief minister R Karpurasundara Pandiyan.

The accused pleaded not guilty when the judge asked them whether they pleaded guilty or not.

The judge posted further hearing in the case to August 16.
