One held for alleged rape of Anjana Mishra

The special squad of the Orissa police set up to probe the alleged gang-rape of Anjana Mishra -- who had claimed that former advocate general Indrajit Ray had tried to rape her -- arrested Padia Sahoo, one of the three accused in the case.

According to the police, Padia Sahoo, a resident of Barang, where Anjana Mishra was allegedly gang-raped by three armed men on Saturday night, had confessed his involvement.

The Orissa police had constituted four special squads, each headed by a senior deputy superintendent of police, to investigate the incident. The government has already ordered a Crime Branch inquiry into the incident.

The police also seized the scooter used by the miscreants from its owner who lives in Chauliaganj in Bhuwaneswar. The special squad is interrogating Padia Sahoo and hopes to arrest the two other accused soon.

Mishra, the estranged wife of a senior Indian Foreign Service officer, had alleged in her first information report before the women's police station yesterday that she was gang-raped by three men at gunpoint near the Barang jungle.

She also named Sahoo as one of the three culprits who helped overpower the driver and take control of the car. Sahoo, she further alleged, had raped her inside the car.

The special squad, sources said, arrested Sahoo from Goop Sahi near Barang early today.

Mishra had yesterday submitted a memorandum to Orissa high court Acting Chief Justice Sushant Chatterjee seeking adequate protection.
