Jaya files Rs 10m defamation suit against Tamil publicationThe Madras high court has ordered issuance of notice to Tamizhan Express, a Tamil weekly and three others on a defamation suit filed by All India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha, seeking Rs 10 million as damages for publishing a defamatory article about her. Taking the suit on file, Justice I David Christian ordered issuance of notices, returnable in a week, to Tamizhan Express, its printer and publisher H Sivakumar, executive editor Sudangan and Tamil Maanila Congress functionary Valampuri John, who had written the article. In her petition, Jayalalitha claimed that she was hurt and shocked by the article, titled 'Minminigal Natchathiram Aagathu' (anything that twinkles is not a star). The article, devoid of any truth and being vituperative and malicious, was aimed at spoiling her image and reputation among the people. The defendant, purporting to publish a series of articles, were resorting to false and frivolous allegations and it amounted to violation of the right guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, she said while praying to restrain the defendant from publishing any of her personal matter.
