E-Mail this report to a friend

Former Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav and five others were released today on bail from Beur Central Jail in Patna after 72 days in judicial custody in connection with the Rs 9,500 million fodder scandal.

Special CBI [Central Bureau of Investigation] Judge S K Lal passed their release orders after the Supreme Court yesterday granted them interim bail on furnishing sureties and bail bonds to the satisfaction of the special court trying the fodder scandal cases.

The accused could not be released yesterday as the Supreme Court's orders did not reach the designated CBI court in time.

Besides Yadav, the others who have been released are former Union minister Chandradeo Prasad Verma, former Bihar minister Vidya Sagar Nishad, Rashtriya Janata Dal legislator R K Rana, former state animal husbandry director Ram Raj Ram, and budgeting officer of the state government Braj Bhushan Prasad.

The case against them relates to fraudulent withdrawal of over Rs 9.7 million from the Deoghar treasury between 1992-96.

The judge directed Yadav and the others to appear in court on January 18.
