Snowflakes reach Srinagar long after Santa!Srinagar greeted the season's first snow on Thursday. The upper reaches of the Kashmir valley have been experiencing heavy snowfall for the past three days. The first flakes of snow came much to the delight of this picturesque hill town's citizens, particularly the children. Heavy snowfall continued in Gulmarg, Khilanmarg, Pahalgam, Tangmarg, Yusmarg, Sonmarg, Deksum and Kokernag. Charar-e-Sharief town recorded nearly a foot of snowfall. Amarnath and Sheshnag in south Kashmir have registered around five feet of snow so far. Meanwhile, rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the plains of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab, and at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, coastal Orissa, the Bihar plains, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep. Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country. Rain or snow occurred at most places in Jammu and Kashmir, at many places in Himachal Pradesh, and at isolated places in the hills of west Uttar Pradesh. Rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in Haryana and Punjab, at a few places in west Madhya Pradesh, and at isolated places in Tamil Nadu. Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country. Cold wave conditions prevailed in south-west Rajasthan and parts of north Gujarat. Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in north central Maharashtra and parts of south-west Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch. They were below normal in south Gujarat and parts of the Bihar plateau, Himachal Pradesh, Vidarbha and Karnataka. They were appreciably above normal in Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, the Bihar plains, east Uttar Pradesh, the hills of west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Kashmir, north-west Rajasthan, and parts of Meghalaya, north Madhya Pradesh and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Night temperatures were also above normal in coastal Orissa. They were normal in the rest of the country except for Arunachal Pradesh from where data were sparse.
