Mufti to contest from Anantnag

E-Mail this report to a friend

Former Union home minister and president of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party Mufti Mohammad Sayeed will seek re-election from the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in the coming elections.

Announcing this at a press conference in Srinagar today, he said Muzaffar Hussain Baig will contest from Baramulla as a party nominee.

Sayeed said his party has decided to field peasant leader Sardar Trilok Singh from Jammu while Jagdesh Safolia Wili be the party nominee from Udhampur.

He said the names of the party nominees for the by-election for the Bijbehara and Langate assembly seats will also be announced later.

The Langate seat fell vacant following the killing of Abdul Ahad Wani by militants while Mehbooba Mufti resigned from Bijbehara after leaving the Congress.

Sayeed won on a Congress ticket from Anantnag during the last Lok Sabha elections, defeating his nearest National Conference rival while Muzaffar Hussain Baig lost to National Conference candidate Professor Saif-ud-din Soz in Baramulla.

While Sayeed left the Congress to form JKPDP, Soz was expelled from the National Conference for life because of voting against the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre in the confidence vote in the Lok Sabha.

Sayeed said his party was satisfied with the response of people to their public meetings. ''People are not satisfied with the National Conference as it has failed on all fronts,'' he said.
