ASSEMBLY POLL '98
|
No running after Sonia, says BardhanThe left parties are of the view that they will consider extending support to Congress president Sonia Gandhi if she takes the initiative to form a government after the collapse of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre. Making this point clear in an interview to a private TV channel, Communist Party of India general secretary A B Bardhan said the question of extending support to her would arise only after the BJP led government, which was "limping on the brink of precipice", falls and Gandhi shows the willingness to form an alternative government. "Why should we run after her?" he added. He was also categorical that the CPI would not give any undertaking to the Congress or any other political party. "We will decide on our own", he added. His party was of the firm view that the BJP-led government must go as it was a disaster. Replying to another question, he ruled out the possibility of forging any alliance with the Telugu Desam Party, saying it was in the BJP camp. There could not be any understanding with the TDP for the assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, he said. UNI
