ELECTIONS '98
|
Mid-term poll after December, says JayaAll India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha says a mid-term election (to the Lok Sabha) was likely any time after December. In a five-page letter, she asked the party cadres to be ready to face the people after the party organisational elections scheduled to be held from October 24 to December 28 as "chances of the elections, wherein we have to face the people, being held appear imminent". This is the first time Jayalalitha is speaking of a mid-term poll. Jayalalitha has taken a strident anti-Centre stand in relation to the Cabinet recommendation to dismiss the Rabri Devi government in Bihar, by alleging that the Centre was attempting to engineer defections, a line taken by the Congress's Lok Sabha leader Sharad Pawar. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had earlier said that a mid-term election to the Lok Sabha was inevitable. UNI
