Inter-community clash breaks out in TN village

The police burst seven rounds of teargas shells and fired two rounds of rubber bullets before resorting to a mild lathi-charge to disperse two warring groups at Thiruthangal, near Sivakasi, in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu last evening.

Madurai range DIG of police M Ganesan said shopkeepers belonging to a particular community were demanding the arrest of those involved in stoning their shops on Sunday. Following this, supporters of one Rajendran, who was injured in a stabbing incident on September 4 last due to previous enmity, took objection to the shopkeepers' demand.

After a police party arrived at the spot, the two groups indulged in stone-throwing, in which seven people, including two policemen, were injured, he added.

As bursting of teargas shells and firing rubber-bullets proved ineffective, police resorted to a mild lathi-charge.

Ganesan said one person also sustained stab injuries in the melee.

Thirtysix people have been taken into custody in connection with the incidents, he added.

Police pickets have been posted in the town following the incident.
