Jaya renews demand to dismiss Karunanidhi

All India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha today reiterated her demand for dismissal of the Karunanidhi government, alleging that terrorism and anti-national activities were rampant in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement in Madras, she alleged that the activities of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were increasing in the state. The submission of the state 'Q' branch police before the Unlawful Activities Prevention Tribunal, during its recent sitting at Thiruchirapalli, that the LTTE activities were still continuing in the state, was a case in point, she added.

The tribunal had a sitting at Thiruchirapalli on November 1, to consider an application filed on behalf of the LTTE, as to whether sufficient grounds still existed to continue the ban on the militant outfit, spearheading a violent campaign for a separate homeland for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Jayalalitha said the February 14 serial bomb blasts in Coimbatore and subsequent arrests of terrorists involved in them pointed to the fact that anti-national forces had intensified their activities after Karunanidhi assumed office.

Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Moopanar, meanwhile, said the question of dismissal of the DMK government on the ground that there was an upsurge in the LTTE's activities in the state, did not arise.

Addressing a press conference in Madras, he said if the 'Q' branch police had deposed before the tribunal about increase in activities of the LTTE in the state, the state government should take note of it and act accordingly.

He said he did not think that the state government was encouraging the LTTE.

The DMK government was dismissed in 1991 on the ground of supporting the LTTE.
