Two Pakistani soldiers killed in yet another attempt on Siachen

Two Pakistani soldiers were killed and an Indian jawan was injured when Pakistani troops made two unsuccessful attempts to capture Indian posts in the southern part of Siachen glacier in the Himalayas since last evening.

A defence ministry spokesman said an alert sentry paratrooper Kuber Chand, noticed a group of Pakistani troops marching towards his post under the cover of darkness in the southern part at Siachen glacier last evening.

He said as soon as the Pak troops reached the actual ground position line, the sentry opened fire and simultaneously alerted other soldiers.

This was followed by effective light machine gun and medium machine gun fire during which two Pakistani soldiers were killed, he said. However, the others managed to flee back to their post.

Early this morning, around 4.45 am, an Indian post six km west of NJ-9842, was again attacked by a group of Pakistani soldiers, the spokesman said.

He said however, Raj Kumar, a jawan, immediately alerted other troops and the change of medium and small arms ensued when the Pakistani troops intruded into the Indian territory to attack the post.

The exchange continued for some time before Pakistani troops were beaten back to the AGPL, he said.

One soldier suffered bullet wounds in the Pak firing.

Earlier, the Pakistani troops had made three unsuccessful attempts during October to capture Indian posts. However, each time Indian troops repulsed their attack and also inflicted casualties on the enemy.

On Saturday, an army officer was killed following unprovoked heavy shelling by Pakistani troops at Siachen, a defence ministry spokesman had said in New Delhi over the weekend.

He said Lt Col Sachin Kumar Kanderiya was killed when a shell fired by the Pakistani troops exploded near his post on the glacier.

Pak troops fired 411 shells from artillery and other weapons, forcing Indian troops to retaliate. However, the casualty suffered by Pakistani troops in the retaliatory action was not known, the spokesman said.

He said Pakistani troops also fired on Indian positions at Kargil sector on Saturday. While the Indian side suffered no casualty, a Pakistani bunker was destroyed in the retaliatory action, the spokesman added.
