Jaya urges government to heed IB's warning on blasts

All India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha today asked the central and Tamil Nadu governments to take steps to put down extremism in the state, in the wake of information from the Intelligence Bureau that fundamentalists were conspiring to set off blasts in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement in Madras, she criticised Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for ignoring her demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the recent bomb blasts in the state and the activities of extremists, who posed a threat to the life of the people.

She alleged that the state government had adopted a passive attitude in curbing extremism and failed to take action when central intelligence agencies had cautioned it in the past. This had resulted in "anarchy of the extremists", she said.

Jayalalitha alleged that the chief minister had never taken into account the suggestions which she made in her capacity as an Opposition leader, for rooting out extremism and restoring peace in the state. Karunanidhi, "whose policy is to cover up everything till it explodes on a large scale", should hereafter evince genuine concern for the people, she said.
