Arun Gawli is acquitted

Gangster Arun Gawli, who was arrested for the murder of builder Nathubhai Desai last year, was today acquitted for lack of evidence by Sessions Judge S R Jaiswal in Bombay.

Desai was shot dead by four persons in his office premises in Nariman Point, Bombay, last year.

The prosecution, in its case, had said the diary found on Desai's body contained Gawli's phone number which itself proved that Gawli had been pestering the builder with extortion demands, which was the reason behind his murder. Gawli had been lodged in jail after the police arrested him under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act.

The judge, however, found Gawli not guilty due to lack of enough evidence.
