Blast in Jehad committee buildingAn explosion rocked the All India Jehad Committee headquarters on north Madras's Parrys corner on Thursday morning. There was no casualty in the blast though 13 members of the committee, including its president Kunnangudi R M Hanifa, youth wing leader Akram Khan and two others were inside the building. The blast caused minor damage to two staircases. The police said a crude gelatine device was used for the purpose. This is the second explosion in the city this month. On January 10, a blast occurred near the United States consulate on the arterial Anna Salai flyover. The Jehad committee office had been under police surveillance after the January 10 blast. Jehad president Hanifa, meanwhile, said he had been receiving calls threatening that the headquarters would be destroyed. He alleged the explosion was the handiwork of the Hindu Munnani, whose leader Ramagopalan had blamed the Jehad committee for the bomb blasts on three trains on December 6. UNI |
