Sushil Kumar is the navy's highest decorated officerThe highest decorated officer in the Indian Navy today, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sushil Kumar is a specialist in amphibious warfare and hydrography. He has participated in all major naval operations, including the liberation of Goa in 1961 and the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971. Commissioned in January 1961, Admiral Sushil Kumar belongs to the executive branch of the navy. As director of naval operations, he was decorated with the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal for the conduct of Operation Pawan (in Sri Lanka) and Operation Cactus (in the Maldives). He was earlier awarded the Nao Sena (Navy) Medal for gallantry whilst in command of INS Ghorpad. Admiral Sushil Kumar has held operational commands in every rank. He has the rare distinction as a naval officer to have played polo on the international circuit with an international rating of +4 goals. Before being named to head the navy, he was flag officer commanding-in-chief, Southern Command, at Cochin. UNI |
