Curfew in Karnataka town

E-Mail this report to a friend

Night curfew was imposed in Suratkal and nearby places in Karnataka's coastal Dakshina Kannada district Wednesday.

Earlier, the police had fired five rounds in the air when mobs resorted to road blocking and stone-throwing. Thirty-two people, including 20 police personnel, were injured in the incidents. Several people have been rounded up in connection with the clashes.

In Suratkal, a group of people backed by the Hindu Jagaran Vdike and Vishwa Hindu Parishad had resorted to a dharna this morning, alleging that the police had not acted on a complaint of eve-teasing by members of another community. The police made a lathi-charge to disperse them.

Thereafter, the trouble spread, and mobs obstructed traffic at several places by setting up road blocks. Tension gripped nearby areas also.

Director General of Police T Srinivasulu said in Bangalore that the situation was under control and no untoward incident was reported since afternoon.
