Cold kills 4 in Rajasthan

The cold wave has claimed four lives in Rajasthan this season, with two people succumbing in Jaipur and Dungarpur districts overnight.

The police said a man was found dead near the railway crossing at Civil Lines in Jaipur while a vegetable vendor died in Sabala, Dungarpur -- both on Sunday.

Earlier, deaths from cold had been reported in Bhilwara and Alwar districts.

Meanwhile, the cold wave sweeping most of the North-West for the past five days intensified with night temperatures falling to 5 to 10 degrees celsius below normal.

Chandigarh and adjoining areas in Punjab and Haryana saw the minimum temperature dipping to the lowest of the season, 1.8 degrees celsius against the normal of 7.2 degrees. This is the coldest since December 14, 1996. However, there was some respite from the dense fog.

Reports said Kashmir was shivering under intense cold wave conditions. The mercury in Srinagar hovered at seven degrees below zero. The harsh cold spell was at its worst in Ladakh with the principal towns of Leh and Kargil reporting minus 12.5 degrees celcius.

Delhi and Amritsar saw night temperatures dipping to five degrees celsius below normal.

Pathankot bordering Jammu and Kashmir reported a minimum of 5.1 degrees celcius.

Ambala and Hisar were the coldest places in Haryana, showing 5.1 and 6.2 degrees celsius respectively.

The weather bureau has forecast ground frost and fog in Punjab.
