Govt employees get back to work

The Karnataka government employees' indefinite strike for wage parity with central staff has been called off temporarily.

Announcing this on Sunday in Bangalore, Karnataka Government Employees Association president K Sippegowda said the executive committee unanimously decided to stop the agitation considering public interest.

Over 600,000 employees had struck work from December 21 pressing various demands including wage parity, but called it off the next day. They renewed the strike on December 24, rejecting the government's offer of 25 per cent hike in pay. A four-member committee of ministers held discussions with employee representatives to resolve the tangle.

Sippegowda said the executive agreed to accept the government's offer of additional Rs 1.5 million. The state committee would ratify this decision soon, he added.

He urged the government to settle the house rent and city compensatory allowances at the earliest, and appoint a committee to look into the new pay structure.
