The Bharatiya Janata Party's Tamil Nadu unit general secretary L Ganesan today described as "unfortunate", All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham general secretary J Jayalalitha's announcement that her party would join the nationwide strike against the economic policies of the A B Vajpayee government on December 11.

Addressing the media in Madras, he said it was unfortunate that a partner of the ruling BJP-led coalition at the Centre was joining a strike against the government.

Ganesan asked Jayalalitha to reconsider her stand and refrain from joining the strike.

Jayalalitha had every opportunity to raise the issues in the coordination committee of the ruling coalition or take them up with the prime minister, instead of joining the agitation, he said.

This kind of an agitation was "unique" in the Indian political scene, he added.
