Sushma quits Delhi assembly

Former Delhi chief minister Sushma Swaraj today resigned from the state legislative assembly a few hours before the expansion of the Union Cabinet.

Swaraj, in a letter to the speaker of the Vidhan Sabha, said she was tendering her resignation as a member of the assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with "immediate effect".

She had been elected from Hauz Khas constituency in the November 25 election.

Swaraj has thus chosen to retain her South Delhi Lok Sabha seat.

The country's electoral laws require that a person elected from two constituencies relinquish one of the seats within 20 days.

Swaraj's resignation has also fuelled speculation about her being inducted into the Union Cabinet this evening.

She was minister for information and broadcasting with additional charge of communications before being sent to Delhi as chief minister, just 45 days before the polls.
