SC orders Jaya's trial in land deal scam caseAll legal hurdles in the way of trial of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha and her aide Sasikala Natrajan in the Rs 300 million land deal scam, popularly known as the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation land deal case of 1992, were removed when the Supreme Court today directed the special judge, Madras to proceed with the trial. The direction was given by a division bench comprising Justices M K Mukherjee and S S M Qadri while vacating a Madras high court order directing postponement of the trial till further orders. Further, the court allowed both Jayalalitha and the other complainant in the case, the state of Tamil Nadu, to withdraw their respective special leave petitions in view of the fact that the state government itself had filed a comprehensive chargesheet after detailed investigation into the case. According to the chargesheet, Jayalalitha allegedly bought the land belonging to the TNSIC at a throwaway price in utter misuse of her official position as the chief minister . The state government, therefore, filed the complaint against her for offences both under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. UNI
