3 held for ABVP worker's murderThe police achieved a major breakthrough in the investigation into last month's murder of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad functionary, Professor Paramasivam, with the arrest of three Muslim activists in Madurai yesterday. Police superintendent in the Crime Branch's criminal investigation department, I Thukkayandi told newsmen today that while Sahul Hameed (19) and Noorudeen (32) were arrested yesterday afternoon, Ibrahim (34) was arrested in the evening. The police were looking for more persons in connection with the murder, he added. The arrested were produced before judicial magistrate-2 today, who remanded them to 15 days's judicial custody. They were later lodged in the Central Jail in Madurai. Thukkayandi said interrogation of the arrested persons revealed that Professor Paramasivam, vice-president of the ABVP's Tamil Nadu unit, had addressed some meetings in Muslim-dominated areas, while carrying an idol of Lord Krishna, which had angered the minority community. Professor Paramasivam, who taught at a local college, was hacked to death by a gang while he was returning home on a two-wheeler on the night of March 28, the day the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government won the confidence vote in Parliament. The state government ordered a CB-CID probe into the murder last week. UNI
